Paestum, ancient city of Campania situated in the Tyrrhenian Sea, was one of the main centers of Ancient Greece. Founded around the beginning of the seventh century BC by Greek colonists from Sybaris, the city had formerly the name of Poseidon, as sacred to Poseidon. At the end of the fifth century BC Paestum was conquered by Lucan, under which experienced a period of prosperity and reached its greatest territorial expansion, and then became a Roman colony with the name of Paestum. In the ninth century. The city was abandoned because of the numerous attacks of the Saracens and the unhealthy climate. Surrounded and buried by swamps caused by the river Sele, Paestum remained hidden and forgotten for about 900 years.

The Temples
